Are
you looking for somewhere to hold your weekly or monthly meeting?
Or to hold a party or other social occasion? Even a musical
extravaganza? Then welcome to the Darby and Joan Hall in the
middle of Cottingham. Finkle Street to
be exact. It is a very popular venue for all kinds of activities. We have two Halls available
for hire, so read on. The Hall itself was founded in 1954 as a charity,
and was built to act as a "social centre for the
social, moral and physical well-being of elderly people residing in
Cottingham and for such other charitable purposes as from time to time be
agreed upon". However, since 1954, changes in economic and
social conditions have meant that the Hall has become, in effect, the village
hall for Cottingham and it is now used for a variety of purposes by all age
groups. It is managed by a Committee of Trustees, all of
whom are volunteers." Hire Costs are reviewed annually. Please contact Booking Secretary for details.
The Darby and Joan Hall has two Halls and hosts many and varied activities for all ages. Key facilities and activities are shown here:

INFORMATION
ABOUT OUR HIRERS
CANINE PARTNERS is a registered charity that assists
people with physical disabilities to enjoy a greater independence and quality
of life through the provision of specially trained dogs. Over the past 27
years the charity has provided more than 680 trained dogs to help disabled
people. More than 1.2
million people in the UK use a wheelchair, and a significant number of those
would benefit from a canine partner. The dogs are trained to help with
everyday tasks such as opening and shutting doors, unloading the washing machine,
picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in
an emergency. The charity aims to train dogs to meet the needs of people with
even the most complex disabilities, including members of HM Armed Forces.
Canine Partners is working closely with the Forces charity Help for Heroes,
which has funded several partnerships of injured ex-servicemen and women. These life
transforming dogs also provide psychological and social benefits including
increased independence, confidence and self-esteem. A canine partner also
brings companionship, a sense of security and increases social interaction. Here at the
Darby & Joan hall we hold monthly classes for the training of our
puppies, under the tuition of our local trainer Jemma, these puppies will become Canine
Partners of the future assisting people with physical disabilities. Canine
Partners receives no government funding and relies solely on public
donations. For further information please visit caninepartners.org.uk

AV is the presentation of a series of images or video clips with an
accompanying soundtrack. AVs are easily produced using software to combine
still images, video, text and sound and can be played on any PC, TV, DVD or sent to YouTube. We meet
approximately every second Monday of the month at 7:30pm. Turn a collection
of digital photos into something you will be proud to show. For more details

Community
Builders
There are people in
the Cottingham community who suffer from loneliness, depression and other forms
of mental health issues or long term medical conditions. These people may be looking for someone to
talk to or something to do.
As a result the East
Riding of Yorkshire Council in connection with the NHS, Mind Charity, and Smile
Foundation have decided to publish a booklet showing all the social and leisure
activities taking place in Cottingham, displaying when and where they are held
and who to contact. It will be freely available in doctors
surgeries and the library and it will be re-issued every six months so that it
is up to date.
Anybody in the locality
will be free to apply or seek further information from any of the groups in the
booklet.
The first step is to
identify the groups which already exist, where they meet and who to
contact. In our case the groups concerned will be those using the Darby and
Joan Hall.
We think it is a
worthwhile cause and you could say it is free advertising for your
group. There may be financial benefits too for the groups who
decide to take part.
So, if you would like to be involved and be included in the booklet, or
you would like more information, please contact our Booking Secretary, Les
Fisher, (telephone number 01482 343609) and he will be able to put you in touch
with your local co-ordinator to find out how Community Builders can help you.

INFORMATION AND NEWS FROM THE TRUSTEES
NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2019
Bookings 2019
Thank you very much for getting your bookings to me
in time for the new year. Some groups who book speakers in advance have
already started to send me requests for bookings in 2020. If you are booking a speaker please check on
the availability of the room first. Any
early bookings you wish to make will be gladly received.
New Trustees
Would you like to help to manage the Darby and Joan Hall? The
Trustees are inviting anyone who belongs to one of the voluntary groups which
hire our Hall and which are not already represented on the Committee of
Trustees to come and join us to help us to keep on providing this important
village facility. We are all volunteers and we meet as a Committee every two
months to plan how to keep improving the facilities we offer to anyone who
hires the Hall. If you would like more information, then please give our
Chairman, Bob Minors, a ring on 01482 842270 and he will be delighted to talk
to you.
Parking
Trustees have received a few complaints during the last couple of
months about indiscriminate car parking on our premises causing difficulties
for other users. The space for car parking is very limited. The Trustees have no wish to be authoritative
about parking and would much rather prefer users to be considerate to everyone
else and not block the entrances or exits.
To try and overcome the problem the Committee would like to make the
following suggestions:
a. When parking in the area in front of the Main Hall use the Finkle Street entrance to enter and exit.
b. When parking in the area at the rear of the Small Hall use
the Whiting Close entrance to enter and exit.
c. When parking in the driveway down the side of the Hall use
the Whiting Close entrance to enter and exit via the Finkle
Street entrance. Park vehicles along the fence border, but
not on the gravelled area. This will also leave the entrance doors to
the kitchen and Small Hall freely available.
Any feedback is welcome on this subject.
Extended Bookings
It has been noted for a
while now that some groups regularly arrive very early or finish well after
their allotted time. Again, the
Committee has no wish to be prescriptive about this, but it has to be pointed
out that the extra time being used is potential booking time and members of the
groups concerned should not think that it is theirs by right should another
group book the hall either before or after the event.
Usually half an hour is left
between bookings, enough time to set up and pack away. When this is not the
case you should be contacted or contact Les.
A sensible compromise is always possible. Peter should also be aware of what is happening.
May we please ask groups to be
aware that they are exceeding their allocated booking time. At the moment there is no intention to
confront anyone. We simply request that
you are sensible over this matter.
Best wishes
Les
